Behind the scenes at Dutch National Opera & Ballet

Duration 11:00 - 16:00

How is a wig made? What happens behind the scenes? Discover this and more during our Open House.

This year, Dutch National Opera & Ballet is once again organising an open house for the public, featuring a varied programme with something for everyone. Alongside performances by Dutch National Ballet, the Junior Company, the Dutch National Opera Chorus and various soloists, there will also be exhibitions, studio tours, a craft workshop, roundtables and lots more. If you'd like to learn more about our technical systems, lighting, props or costumes, our staff will be on hand to answer questions. Make sure to be on time so you don't miss a thing!

Once again, Dutch National Opera & Ballet is throwing its doors wide open. The Open House is the ideal introduction to opera and ballet and a great opportunity for a unique glimpse behind the scenes. Even for our regular guests, there’s plenty to see and do. Admission is free, there’s no need to reserve and everybody is welcome – both young and old.

This year, we’re starting the Open House outdoors on the square with a whole range of musical surprises, from 10.30. The theatre doors open at 11.00. Come inside and discover the world backstage and at front of house.

In the auditorium, we begin with a public ballet class for the dancers of Dutch National Ballet. Today, our dancers’ daily training – which normally takes place behind closed doors – is given on stage, so you can watch.

This year, too, we’re presenting some special performances by Dutch National Opera Studio and the Chorus of Dutch National Opera. And Dutch National Ballet are giving a special public rehearsal of one of the productions for the coming season.

After the performances, you can wander about on stage yourself and get a close-up view of all the scenery and stage technology.

You can look at exhibitions, pay visits to the ateliers or go on a technical guided tour that takes you right to the top of the theatre (age 10+).

Our staff will be happy to answer any questions about the technical equipment, the lighting, the props and the costumes. There are various workshops for children, the ateliers are open all day long, our theatre shop has special offers and the decoratelier is presenting a selection of models. In short, there’s something for everyone.

Come in good time, so you don’t miss anything!
