Monique Duurvoort
Monique Duurvoort is an independent interdisciplinary artist born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with roots in Friesland, Suriname and beyond. Her work explores themes of heritage, cultural identity, self-image and symbolism.
Monique trained as a professional dancer at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (now the Academy of Theatre & Dance) and danced with the Dutch National Ballet for 13 years. After her dance career, she studied Arts and Cultural Management at Erasmus University in Rotterdam and became a choreographer. She has gradually expanded her artistic forms of expression by making film, video and installation art. In dance, Monique is known for her unique vocabulary in which classical and hip-hop dance styles blend seamlessly.
