About L'Autre Côté
Choreographer, dancer and movement director, Sedrig Verwoert presents his most recent piece L’Autre Côte during Dancing Apart Together. Verwoerts pieces and performances examine gender, sexuality and the social structures in relation to our changing environment. L’Autre Cote was conceived in a moment in time when the coronavirus pandemic and racial injustice set a rare stage that evoked loneliness, longing and grief.
The piece is built for ten dancers based on two values that to Verwoert are important vantage points for our societal future: connectivity and conversation. The dancers represent - on a micro level - the current state of society, instilling the dancers with a collaborative responsibility to the piece.
All dancers have been challenged to let go of conventional gender roles and with this step outside of traditional structures. To make this new approach a successful one they need to move together with mutual trust. In order for this trust to exist truths need to be spoken. Even the seemingly personal ones, because they are in fact political. Thus, the question: Where will you be?
L’Autre Côté is a meditation on the seismic shifts that are taking place in the world, while on a deeper level hinting to the possible shifts within the ballet world.
“This piece had to have a political intention, there isn’t any other way to work through the intense emotions of this place in time” – Sedrig Verwoert
“The normal seemed to be a thing of the past, if it ever was of the present” - Sedrig Verwoert
