‘The double role is extremely challenging, because of the two totally different and opposite characters.’
Principal dancer Maia Makhateli about the double role of Odette/Odile in Swan Lake.
“The role of Odette/Odile has a special place in my heart. It has been my dream role ever since I was a little girl, and now I’ve danced it in many versions of Swan Lake, in very different phases of my life. The double role is extremely challenging, because of the two totally different and opposite characters. On the one hand, there’s the White Swan Odette, a woman transformed into a swan, who shows her vulnerability when she falls in love and hopes to be rescued through that love. And on the other, there’s the Black Swan Odile, whose role is the absolute opposite, revolving around seduction, manipulation and power. I think it’s wonderful to experience both roles and bring them to life, presenting a credible interpretation of the transformation from White to Black Swan, and the differences between them, in a very short time. I really love this ballet, and it will always be one of my favourites”.
