Bassem Akiki
A specialist in contemporary repertoire, Bassem Akiki has conducted the world premieres of many new works, particularly at the Théâtre Royale de La Monnaie in Belgium. There, he conducted premieres of Björk’s Medúlla, Orfeo & Majnun (also at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence), Mark Grey’s Frankenstein and most recently Philippe Boesmans’ final opera On purge bébé. Other world premieres include Nicholas Lens and J.M. Coetzee’s Slow Man at Malta Festival, Poznań, and Zad Moultaka’s Hémon at Opéra National du Rhin. Current and future work includes debuts and returns with Opéra de Lyon, Opéra National du Rhin and Royal Danish Opera. Bassem is currently writing his first opera for Théâtre Royale de La Monnaie, alongside various other compositions for theatres and festivals worldwide.
