Sir Mark Elder
SIR MARK ELDER (musical director) is Director of Music with the Hallé Orchestra, Principal Artist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Artistic Director of Opera Rara. He has made regular appearances at prominent international opera houses like Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris and Lyric Opera of Chicago and at the Glyndebourne and Bayreuth festivals.
Besides numerous symphonic engagements, he has recently been engaged on several operas: King Roger (Bregenz Festival), Tannhäuser (Opéra National de Paris), Billy Budd (Glyndebourne), Wonderful Town (Hallé) and various productions for Covent Garden, including The Tsar’s Bride, Fidelio and Wozzeck. At the 2013 Proms, he conducted the Hallé Orchestra in a Parsifal that was received with great enthusiasm. Sir Mark Elder received a knighthood in 2008, was voted ‘conductor of the year’ by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2006, and received an Honorary Membership of the RPS in 2011.
