Alma Mathijsen studied Creative Writing at the Pratt Institute in New York, before graduating from the Image & Language Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Since then she has published three novels, a memoir, a novella and a collection of short stories. Her debut novel was Alles is Carmen, followed by De grote goede dingen. For her third novel Vergeet de meisjes (2017) she was shortlisted for the BNG Bank Literature Prize. In 2020 she published the autobiographical Save the Summer, in which she reflects on language, coming of age and loss. The book was nominated for the Libris Literature Prize. She also writes essays for NRC Handelsblad.
