Berima Amo
Berima Amo is a Ghanaian singer, bandleader, trumpeter, composer and cultural entrepreneur. Because of his desire to see young people use local drums and acoustic instruments in new music, Berima led a project called 'Highlife restoration Project' to sensitise Ghanaian youth through workshops, radio and TV interviews, band coaching and artist mentoring in Ghana. All this through his music foundation Better Music Africa. In 2021, he founded the first big band in Ghana - Osaberima Big Band - thus reviving an era of Ghanaian big band highlife music (West African blues). In the past two years, he has also been moving more into the classical field. For instance, he was part of Music Stages, a collaboration with musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 2021, he won a grant to compose a thirty-minute piece for orchestra, his composition debuting in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. This summer, he will tour again with his Nkabom AfroBand, which consists of musicians from Ghana and the Netherlands.
