Donna Chittick
Donna Chittick (Sint Maarten, 1986) began dancing at Solid Ground Movement, a hip hop school in Amsterdam founded by Alida Dors (currently artistic director of Theatre Rotterdam) and Bryan Druiventak. She went on to become a core dancer and assistant choreographer at the hip hop dance company BackBone (established in 2012 also by Alida Dors).
She took her initial steps as a choreographer in 2016, when she enrolled in Solid Ground Movement's Urban Arts development programme. She continued to grow as a maker and was approached by The Hague production house Korzo to create a performance for their young performers, Jong Korzo. Following this, in 2019, she participated in BackBone’s De Nieuwe Makersregeling, where she produced the diptych Together x ALPH (2021) and choreographed the performance Kaap Liefde (2021), a co-production between BackBone and Raymi Sambo Makes. Donna choreographed So Far So Good, a co-production with WatWeDoen and Theatre Rotterdam, in 2023.
After Alida’s move to Theatre Rotterdam, Donna has been at the helm of BackBone as artistic director since late 2022. She was also its rehearsal director and assistant choreographer.
distinguished by intensity and rawness, authenticity of performance, grounded choreography, and powerful storytelling. Her performances frequently feature familiar issues from our daily and personal life.
