Librettist

Ian Burton is a writer, poet and dramaturg. He has written libretti for Julius Caesar (Teatro Dell’Opera di Roma), Richard III (Vlaamse Opera) and CO2 (La Scala), all with composer Giorgio Battistelli, as well as JJR, Citoyen de Genève (Grand Théâtre de Geneve), The Duchess of Malfi (ENO) and The Beggar’s Opera (Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord). He has collaborated as a dramaturg with Robert Carsen on many productions, including Iphigénie en Tauride, Orfeo ed Euridice (Chicago), Elektra, Tannhäuser (Tokyo) and La traviata (Venice). Other works include seven volumes of poetry and a series of radio plays for the BBC. At Dutch National Opera, he worked as a dramaturg on Fidelio (2010), Dialogues des Carmélites (2015) and Pagliacci/Cavalleria rusticana (2019).
