James F. Ingalls

Lighting designer

James F. Ingalls studied stage management at the Yale School of Drama and then worked as a stage manager for the Yale Repertory Theatre and the Twyla Tharp Dance Company before focusing on lighting design for opera, theatre, and dance.

Ingalls is a regular guest at Dutch National Opera & Ballet, where he designed the lighting for operas such as Only the Sound Remains, La Clemenza di Tito, Girls of the Golden West, and Nixon in China, as well as ballets like Coppelia, Giselle, Don Quixote, Raymonda, and various works from the Dutch National Ballet programme Present/s.

He also created the lighting designs for TWYLA NOW at the New York City Center, George Balanchine's Firebird for Miami City Ballet, and Alexei Ratmansky's The Sleeping Beauty for American Ballet Theatre and Balletto del Teatro alla Scala. He did the same for the twelve world premieres presented by San Francisco Ballet in its Unbound programme. Additionally, he designed for the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Mark Morris Dance Group, including productions such as The Hard Nut, Dido and Aeneas, and L’allegro il Penseroso ed il Moderato.

Ingalls has a special collaboration with opera director Peter Sellars and has worked for many years with theatre director Garry Hynes, who is also the director of the Irish Druid Theatre Company.
