Nanine Linning

Director and choreographer

As a director and choreographer, Nanine Linning intentionally ventures off the beaten theatrical track. Moving across disciplines, she combines dance, opera, concerts and installations. Her work is characterised by energetic movement language and vivid imagery. After having graduated from the Rotterdam Dance Academy, Linning founded her own ensemble by the name of Dance Company Nanine Linning. From 2001 to 2006, she was resident choreographer at Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, going on to serve as artistic director of Theater Osnabrück (Germany) from 2009 to 2012. In 2012, she was appointed to head up the newly established dance company of Theater und Orchester Heidelberg (Germany). She held this role for six years, leaving Heidelberg in 2018. In October 2024, Linning will take on the role of artistic director of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.

Over the years, Linning has created a range of multidisciplinary productions for such theatres as the Bavarian State Opera and The Stuttgart Ballet (Germany), and Boston Ballet. Puccini’s Madama Butterfly marked her debut as an opera director in 2010. Subsequent productions included Philip Glass’s Akhnaten, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (with Monique Wagemakers and Studio Drift), Poulenc’s La voix humaine and Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann. Linning also worked with conductor Teodor Currentzis and his ensemble musicAeterna on such productions as Stravinsky’s Pulcinella.
