Seeing and being seen

In the entrance hall of Dutch National Opera & Ballet, a unique musical and theatrical installation comes to life. This digital opera, created by students from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the HKU University of the Arts in Utrecht, blends digital media, composition, and dance. The students collaborate with dancers from Dutch National Ballet, exploring the tension between observing and being observed.

Are you being seen?

In a world where everyone is constantly watching others and being watched, this digital opera invites you to step inside a cycle of seeing and being seen. Where Our Eyes Meet explores the paradox of wanting to escape the all-seeing eye while at the same time looking to connect and yearning to be noticed and understood.

The students worked with dancers from Dutch National Ballet to create a choreography that visualises the tension between watching and being watched.

Experience enthralling melodies, colourful vocal textures and dynamic images, and embrace the challenge of reflecting on what the process of observation really means.

In the game of watching, seeing and observing, the choice is yours: do you respond to the other’s glance or try to escape from it?
