Gregory Caers

A timeless battle for power - and the truth

Director Gregory Caers brings the age-old story of Oedipus to the United States of 2020. At its centre stands a theme that was as prevalent in ancient Greece as it is today: the obsession with the (futile) search for a universal truth - and the claim to have found it. He collaborates with students from the MBO Theaterschool Rotterdam and the VU Choir.

A timeless battle for power - and the truth

Together with students of the MBO Theaterschool in Rotterdam, Caers has transferred the scene of the Greek tragedy to the United States in 2020. A power struggle in the midst of a pandemic in which the world is rife with prophecies and conspiracy theories. Afraid of what will happen if he loses power in the wake of public sentiment, one man is spouting tall talk and offensive nonsense to hide his own drama. A single ego is enough to jeopardise the fate of an entire nation making its defenceless foundations rattle to the very core.

Over time, Belgian choreographer and theatre-maker Gregory Caers has become one of the fixtures of the Opera Forward Festival. His performances, created in partnership with students of further education colleges, exude youthful enthusiasm as well as vibrant energetic intensity and movement. For OFF 2024 Caers produces an extended performance with a link to one of the operas scheduled for the main stage during the festival. Rex Revisited starts from the same premise as Oedipus Rex / Antigone: the Greek tragedies involving King Oedipus.

Composer Bas Gaakeer has chosen to root this project in deeply dramatic Greek Byzantine choir music, using a clever touch of humour to translate it to modern times. For this, he works with the VU-Choir, as well as professionally trained and amateur musicians.

“At the heart of Oedipus’ story is an obsession with identifying and defending ‘the’truth. Rex Revisited puts a spotlight on how populists today claim to hold a universal truth.”

Director Gregory Caers on Rex Revisited

"As a director, I always give my actors a great deal of freedom and responsibility in the development of material for a performance. For Rex Revisited, I delved into the age-old story of Oedipus together with students from the MBO Theaterschool Rotterdam, and we set out to find its relevance in 2024. At the heart of Oedipus’ story is an obsession with identifying and defending ‘the’ truth; this obsession can also be seen in our current society. Rex Revisited therefore puts a spotlight on how populists today claim to hold a universal truth. The performance does so by staying true to the original story, while also searching for new physical and musical narratives. In Rex Revisited  – for the first time since joining the Opera Forward Festival – I am fusing text, movement, music and song into one performance."

“For the music of Rex Revisited, I went back to the Mediterranean, where Sophocles wrote his Oedipus Rex.

Composer Bas Gaakeer on Rex Revisited

"For the music of Rex Revisited, I went back to the Mediterranean, where Sophocles wrote his Oedipus Rex. The centuries-old Byzantine choral tradition has a distinctive sound with dark voices, drones (elongated sustained tones) and repetitive liturgical texts. Instrumentalists Ezgi Elkırmış and Sinan Arat play on instruments that also are common around the Mediterranean, including Anatolian percussion instruments such as the davul and the def. The ney, a reed flute widely used from Eastern Europe and the Arab world to North Africa, is also defining for the sound of Rex Revisited. For the text, I went all the way back to the source: I used Sophocles’ original ancient Greek texts as well as their Latin translation."

"I play with what is real and what is not, with what you are and what image of yourself you uphold. How real can fake seem?"

Designer Gerbrand Bos on Rex Revisited

"For the design, I draw inspiration from the looks of former First Lady Melania Trump, Instagram celeb Cardi B and satirical rap group Die Antwoord. I play with what is real and what is not, with what you are and what image of yourself you uphold. A visual exploration of seeing and being seen. The costumes are predominantly white and refer to purity and innocence. With kitschy jewellery, fake designer bags and fur coats, the characters assert themselves. A mix of tattered jeans, harnesses, tracksuits and Chanel suits. Which image claims power? And how real can fake seem?"
