Romeo Castellucci

Stage director

Romeo Castellucci studied fine art and scenography at Bologna. After his studies, in 1981, he founded the theatre company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. Since 2011, he has also been working independently of his theatre company. His productions stand out for the priority given to radical imagery over text. As a theatre writer, he has authored several theoretical essays on the performing arts. Castellucci is one of the most sought-after directors in the world of opera. His productions have been staged in the most prestigious theatres and opera houses and at leading international festivals. In recent years, he has worked for Staatsoper Berlin (Daphne), De Munt in Brussels (Das Rheingold and Die Walküre) and Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich (Tannhäuser), as well as the festivals in Aix-en-Provence (Résurrection, based on Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2) and Salzburg (Don Giovanni). At Dutch National Opera, he previously directed Werner Henze’s Das Floß der Medusa (2018).

  • Romeo Castellucci will return to Dutch National Opera in November 2024 with Le lacrime di Eros.
