Derek Welton

The Australian bass-baritone Derek Welton studied German and linguistics at the University of Melbourne. Afterwards, he focused on music, studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He is a well-known, appreciated performer of Wagner and Strauss. For instance, he has successfully performed roles such as Klingsor in Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival and the Bayerische Staatsoper, Wotan in Das Rheingold at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Orest in Elektra, which he not only performed at the Salzburger Festspiele, but also at the Wiener Staatsoper and the Paula de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. With the role of Don Estoban in Der Zwerg, Welton makes his debut at Dutch National Opera in 2021.
