Tyshawn Sorey
Composer Tyshawn Sorey is celebrated for
his incomparable virtuosity and extraordinary
ability to blend composition and spontaneous
music. He has performed internationally
on more than one occasion with his
own ensembles as well as with various artists,
including John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, Roscoe
Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Wadada
Leo Smith, Marilyn Crispell, Myra Melford
and Anthony Braxton. Sorey has received
support for his creative projects from
amongst other Van Lier Fellowship and was
named a 2017 MacArthur Fellow. His music
can be heard in the most prestigious art
institutions around the world. Recently, his
composition Monochromatic Light (Afterlife),
directed by Peter Sellars, had its world
premiere at Park Avenue Armory, New York.
He is currently composer-in-residence at
Philadelphia Opera. For Perle Noire: Meditations
for Joséphine, he is more than just
the composer of the work. Together with
members of the International Contemporary
Ensemble, he also graces the stage as
a pianist and percussionist.
