Team Opera or Team Ballet?
“Team Ballet, mainly because I’ve seen a lot of ballets – ballet just feels a bit more accessible to me. At the same time, I’ve developed more appreciation for opera as I’ve seen more of it. It happens more and more that I hear a piece of music and think, ‘Hey, I know this from an opera or ballet,’ which I find really enjoyable.”
Which upcoming tickets for Dutch National Opera & Ballet would you go to any lengths to get?
“What I’d really love to see, and this might be controversial, is a ballet about Beyoncé’s life. I think it would be fantastic to combine a pop idol like her with ballet; her music is so vivid and I think it would fit perfectly with dance. Or Hedy Lamarr: her life story is extraordinary, and it would also suit ballet beautifully, especially in terms of music style.”
What makes Dutch National Opera & Ballet special, in your opinion?
“The quality and professionalism are unparalleled – the craftsmanship is visible everywhere. Whether you’re looking at the costumes, sets, dancers, choir, or orchestra, everything is of the highest quality. There’s so much attention to detail; everything is meticulously thought through, from the hairstyles and shoes to every musical effect.”
Evening or matinee performance?
“Evening – cozy, with the lights on the Amstel. When I cycle home after a performance, I can let it all sink in, which is really nice. During the day, it’s harder, especially when you have to dive straight back into the bustle of the day.”
Classic opera reimagined, or an innovative, new production?
“An old opera in a new guise, because I often find older stories fascinating, but at the same time, they can feel quite outdated. As a committed feminist, I can get really frustrated with the misogynistic aspects of operas, where suffering is often used as entertainment. Of course, I understand that this comes from the time period, but it can be done differently – with a modern twist. Luckily, we often see this reflected in Dutch National Opera & Ballet’s productions!”
