Mr. Coats

Ballet based on the children’s book by Sieb Posthuma (4+)

Whether it’s winter or summer, Mr. Coats is always freezing cold. Shivering, he tries and tries to get warm, but even thick layers of winter coats don’t help. Isn’t there anything he can do to stop the shivers?

Choreographer Wubkje Kuindersma is adapting the touching picture book Mr. Coats into a ballet for the very youngest audience. A heart-warming performance about the discovery that some things in life are better when you’re with somebody else.

Ballet based on the children’s book by Sieb Posthuma (4+)

Wubkje Kuindersma is a Young Creative Associate with Dutch National Ballet. An important theme in her work is the connection between people. She enjoys collaborating with other artists, and in this case she is working with composer Anthony Fiumara, who has also written the music for previous ballets she has choreographed.

Some years ago, Sieb Posthuma (1960-2014), known for his wonderful, imaginative illustration style, designed the sets and costumes for Dutch National Ballet’s production of the ballet classic Coppelia. Dutch National Ballet is delighted to be involved with his work once again, this time by adapting one of his books into a brand-new children’s ballet.

Reviews

Dutch National Ballet presents a softer, more romantic adaptation of the children's book for audiences aged 4 and up. (...) Oliver Haller's playful costumes anticipate the happy ending: socks and stripes mirror each other sweetly and swirling gowns are the prelude to a heartfelt dervish dance.

14 April

Choreographer Wubkje Kuindersma has Mr. and Ms. Coats gracefully circling each other. (...) The fusion between Mr. and Ms. Coats may not solve existential loneliness, but inside that one coat, with their bodies stuck close together, it must surely be affectionately warm.

… I wanted to show that you could meet somebody, through friendship or love, who feels like a match for you. Somebody who can warm you up.
