Dutch National Opera & Ballet congratulates Raphaël Pichon on winning the 2024 Edison Klassiek Vocaal Award
French conductor Raphaël Pichon won the 2024 Edison Klassiek Award in the Vocal category on Monday, 7 October. Pichon is the musical director of the opera Le lacrime di Eros, which will soon premiere at Dutch National Opera & Ballet.
Pichon received the Edison for his album Vespro della Beata Vergine by Claudio Monteverdi, performed with his ensemble and choir, Pygmalion. The jury described Pichon’s approach as "grand and captivating, but never over the top."
His love for Monteverdi ignited at a young age: at the age of ten, he sang this vespro (vespers) in a boys' choir. That experience deeply moved him and later became the inspiration for the version of the Mariavespers he created in 2017 for Dutch National Opera, in collaboration with Pierre Audi.
Le lacrime di Eros
Raphaël Pichon is the musical director of the opera Le lacrime di Eros, which premieres on 15 November at Dutch National Opera & Ballet, performed by Pichon’s Ensemble Pygmalion.
Pichon has created this new production together with director Romeo Castellucci. The opera combines Renaissance music, including pieces by Monteverdi, with electronic compositions by Scott Gibbons, and, as Pichon puts it, "depicts love in all its intensity."
